Most of America’s covered bridges were built between 1825 and 1875. The bridges weren’t covered to protect travelers but to protect the bridge’s wood from snow and rain, preventing decay and rot. Covered bridges are icons of days gone by and pioneer life. They were often at the heart of the community, giving shelter for concerts, picnics and political rallies. They were also a place for people to post notices and messages that would be protected from the rain and seen as people traveled in the area.
